Cold war fairytales

Speaking of the Cold War, I forgot to post this delicious Tony Judt review of John Gaddis' new book from the NYRB. It's a couple of weeks old, but very much worth the read.

I still have fond memories reading Gaddis' We Now Know and realizing that there were only a handful of (rather thin) primary sources cited. The book was pretty close to worthless. While purporting to offer new insight based on extensive research in previously inaccessible archives, instead it featured warmed over conclusions Gaddis arrived at years ago passed off as revelations.

To then be able to turn to laudatory reviews in most journals was deeply amusing, if not altogether depressing.
