Virtually every article on the Finkelstein-DePaul story has highlighted Finkelstein as a "controversial" figure and pointed specifically to his book The Holocaust Industry. The implication being that a book containing the argument that the Holocaust is often deployed for political purposes is simply beyond the pale.
Helpfully, David Peterson has posted an excerpt from the book. By reading it, you'll get a better idea why so many people deem Finkelstein a threat and wish to run him out of town.
Many of these folks no doubt proudly sport copies of Joan Peters' book on their shelves, to this day. Hell, at least one of them was in such awe of her tome that he decided to rip it off wholesale. Unfortunate that Finkelstein had to expose that, too.
