Cheney in charge

According to the Guardian, the ball is back in Cheney's court on Iran. For a while, it looked like Condi's crew was in the lead.

Let me also highlight one particularly persuasive way of looking at this issue, which resounds all over the Guardian piece:

A well-placed source in Washington said: "Bush is not going to leave office with Iran still in limbo."

...The Washington source said Mr Bush and Mr Cheney did not trust any potential successors in the White House, Republican or Democratic, to deal with Iran decisively.
If you look at it that way, it's hard not to conclude that Bush will launch bombers before he leaves office. No matter how crazy or nonsensical the action may appear. Cheney and Co. feel it's their duty to get Iran "resolved" before any weakling takes over the Oval Office. The opportunity can't be passed up.
